Blog: Are Box Dyes Bad?

The simple answer is Yes, but we appreciate they may work for some with infrequent use! But, especially bad if you do not apply it correctly.  Usually, when you apply a box dyeHair with Plasters yourself, you will be overlapping colour where you have previously just applied colour.  This will dry out your hair and leave the hair ends more porous and damaged. This, in turn, makes it even harder to get an even colour and will likely result in the ends of your hair being darker than the roots.

Colour usually takes hold much faster at the hair ends as they are generally more porous to start with.  This in turn  leads to greater absorption of dye in these areas and a colour variance between the roots and the ends of your hair.  If you have ever used a box dye, you will probably have noticed this yourself!

Box Dye Colours, Longevity, & Risks

You may have found, ii you have used box dyes, that the result is not quite the colour you imagined.  Setting aside the above points, tones, shades, and depths of colour will not match the colour of the dye in the bottle.

A dark brown professional dye product is nearly black on professional shade chart. Dark blonde is really what you would see as a light brown. On top of this, the colour and porosity of your own hair will affect the final colour too, hence you never seem to get the colour you want with a box dye!

Professional hair stylists are trained select the correct professional product for your hair and mix the right colour, tone, and strength to achieve the actual colour you want for your hair type. If you have grey hair this is especially important as the wrong tone, or too much tone, will create problems.  Colour takes differently on different hair types and you can’t control or mix the right colour or peroxide when using box dyes.

The colour from a box dye will generally not last well compared to professional products, though, this is perhaps a good thing given the disastrous results they may create!  Best to leave the colour choice to professionals or run the risk of having to wear a hat.

DIY Blond Hair is easy

NO, it is not.  You may end up with hair that is much darker than anticipated due to porosity and existing hair damage.  Your hair could even go a green colour if the correct tone is not selected for your hair type.

Split Ends

But what aboutbleach I hear you ask?  Shop bought bleach is usually the highest strength and if your hair is very porous and damaged, you are asking for some serious trouble and even more damage.  Orange hair is a risk this time, but worse than that, if you try to bleach previously bleached hair, there is a risk of your hair breaking and coming out in your hands.
